We advise all guests to apply for and carry the new
European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) when traveling in
a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland.
This free plastic card replaces the form E111 which is no
longer valid.

The card entitles you to reduced cost,
sometimes free, medical treatment in most European
countries, but does not cover everything, and definitely
doesn't cover return travel to the UK in a medical
emergency.

What treatment is covered in Portugal?

As the treatment offered to the traveler under the
European Health Insurance Card is linked into your own
country's national health system, you have to apply for
an EHIC in the country in which you live.

If you are a United Kingdom resident you can apply on
line, complete an application form available at your
local post office, or phone the number listed here.

https://www.ehic.org.uk/InternetPROD/home.do

The online application form is easy and quick to complete;- just have your National Insurance number ready. Applications are normally processed within 7 working days.
