Hiking Gear: Packing Tips

Article Title: Hiking Gear: Packing Tips
Author: Kathryn Whittaker

More and more people today enjoy the simple, wholesome fun of
hiking. Hiking is an affordable, yet healthy and emotionally
rewarding way to spend a vacation or a long weekend - and you
don’t need to visit a travel agent.

Experienced hikers will always tell you that every detail
matters when you pack hiking gear, especially tents and camping
stoves. The right hiking gear and clothing, a properly and
ergonomically packed backpack, positive mood and good fitness -
all these elements play an equally important role in the success
of any hiking trip.

Hiking boots are the most important part of your hiking gear.
The right footwear will serve you longer and take you farther
and safer than any training shoes or sneakers will. You can
wear a cheaper pair of pants or an old t-shirt, but a good
reliable pair of hiking shoes or boots should be as expensive
as you can afford.

Many people consider their jackets as another important
clothing item for a hiker, especially in the colder periods of
the year. A hiking jacket can be a true lifesaver if you choose
well. A Gore-Tex top layer will shield you from cold, wet, and
windy weather. Many hiking jacket manufacturers use a layering
approach in their jackets, so that an outer shell layer becomes
not insulation, but goes over insulating clothing. Underneath a
Gore-Tex layer your can wear a lightweight and even trendy
fleece jacket, which you can use in warmer months and for other
sporting activities too.

Hiking tents are a must if you plan to camp in mountain regions
in all three hiking seasons - spring, summer, and fall. Hiking
tents can be used for protection from storms, winds, small
animals and insects. Along with a tent pack a sleeping bag and
an insulating ground pad which also brings warmth as well as
ironing out bumpy ground.

A lightweight, dependable backpacking stove is much easier to
use than campfires which are often prohibited in certain areas.
A camping stove manufactured by such trustworthy brands as
Primus and Coleman are basically a fuel container and a fire
faucet with burner grates. These grates can collapse for
compact storage. More expensive models even have electronic
ignition so you won’t need matches or lighter. Although it is
always a good idea to pack matches anyway in case of ignition
failure. Another version of a camping stove is a storm cooker
which basically consists of a spirit burner with windshield and
handle and a pot or pan for cooking. These stoves are
lightweight because you don’t need a propane container, but are
sufficient for one or two people only.

The newest models of camping stoves are environmentally
friendly, odor-free, and very accommodating. To cook and eat
take a pot, spoon, and a cup. To start the camping stove, if
you don’t have an ignition feature, lighters are more reliable
than matches. Take more fuel than you initially planned -
camping stoves “eat” more fuel in cold weather.

To fully enjoy your hiking trip you must prepare beforehand.
Even a small mistake in selecting your hiking equipment may
result in an injury or at the least in discomfort and a
negative experience. Check and fire up your camping stove while
still at home and double check your hiking gear and equipment
using a hiking checklist before you head out.

If you have children then holidays must, by law,be taken during the school holidays.
This creates a great demand for all the popular family holiday resorts during these holiday periods.

So great can be this demand that the availability of holiday villas and apartments becomes less and less as the Summer Holidays approach.
Although this all must seem common sense, it is surprising just how many people leave the booking of their Summer Holidays for whatever reason, to the last minute.

The result of such delay in reserving the holiday can be both frustration and disappointment in not being able to secure accommodation in the chosen venue for the holiday.

Worse still, if the flights have already been booked to the particular holiday destination, the lack of accommodation can become a virtual nightmare !

Typically here are the steps taken;-

Step one :-Searching the web and then finding the apartment or villa in the chosen venue .All of the family agree that this would make a wonderful holiday venue.

Step two : is the enquiry made to the owner who for reasons of his own, does not keep an up-to-date availability calender on his website or does not keep his agent informed of the bookings already made.

Step three : is the step when the disappointment and frustration occurs.
The owner or agent replies that the apartment / villa is already booked by other persons for the dates required. This disappointment can be reoccurring and more and more frustrating when the same reply becomes more and more frequent with each enquiry.

So why does this happen?

Perhaps among these reasons for delaying to secure a reservation is the popularity of last minute deals and indecision of where to go.

Although it is possible to get some last minute holiday deals, airlines generally offer lower prices for advance bookings and higher prices for last minute bookings and so the gain is offset.

Another possible reason for delaying booking is the fear that illness or other unpredictable events may cause cancellation and loss of money.
Of course it is possible to take out insurance against such events happening, but this can be both expensive and generally unnecessary.

So how does one win? Here is a tip to help avoid such disappointment and frustration:

-most owners of holiday villas and apartments require a small deposit to secure the holiday booking. This deposit is either  fully  or 90% refundable in the event of cancellation provided that enough notice is given to enable the booking dates to be offered to others enquiring, This notice period of cancellation is usually around 6-8 weeks.

- the deposit paid early enough ,will have you sitting smug, ahead of the competition!

If you are new to the concept of booking your own holiday on- line, the procedure is usually quite simple.
Simply search for the holiday country on one or more of the many holiday sites. Then make your enquiry to the owner or agent via their Booking Form or in some cases their Email address.

You will then be sent a booking form for you to complete and return with your booking deposit. Hey Presto you have booked your holiday!

So what is the best time to book your summer holiday?

Why not as early as now, or at the very latest February for ensuring that you have the best choice , beating the rush ,avoiding frustration and disappointment?

A golf holiday to Portugal may be something that a great many foreign visitors would not initially consider. In terms of European golf, the country is competing against the golfing super-powers of the British Isles, with its golfing heritage, and neighboring Spain, with its range of courses.

In the past thirty years the Portuguese golfing industry has really taken off and is finally maturing with a number of regions containing excellent golf resorts and a high caliber of courses to play.

The main golfing holiday regions are centered on the Lisbon region in the south west, the Algarve region in the south, the island of Madeira and the Oeste region.

For those wishing to combine their golf holidays in Portugal with sight-seeing and culture, then a stay in Portugal’s capital Lisbon and the Estoril Coast could make the ideal solution. Given that the IAGTO organization voted the region as the Best European Golf Destination in 2007 you can be sure that the services, facilities and range of clubs are going to be enough for the most demanding tastes. The Estoril coast has over 10 quality golf resorts. To the west there are some challenging and windswept (by Atlantic breezes) clubs – most notably, Praia d’El Rey, which would have to be the most famous in the region and really is one to savor.

The Algarve region, on the south coast of Portugal, offers the broadest range of courses to play and for many is the ideal base for a golf vacation. The western part faces onto the Atlantic Ocean so provides some great links courses to challenge any golfer (such as the Boavista golf club and the scenic hillside Parque Da Floresta course).

Vilamoura, in the central Algarve, hosts an abundance of golf resorts and world class courses including the Quinta do Lago Laranjal and several clubs in the Oceanico resort. The eastern Algarve climate is a little cooler and green fees become a little pricier the more east you travel. Highlights of the area are the Seve Balasteros designed Quinta do Vale golf course and the Jack Nicklaus designed Monte Rei.

The island of Madeira (a small island 500 kilometers due west of the Algarve in the North Atlantic) is a different proposition. It prides itself as a paradise island location and it is truly that.

For the avid golfer, this island provides 3 exceptional courses to play. So, while it doesn’t have the breadth of course choices to offer, it can definitely provide for an idyllic golf location for those seeking something different.

Finally, the Oeste region marks a more recent golfing area which doesn’t yet boast the range of golf seen elsewhere, but what it lacks in championship clubs it makes up for in tranquil scenic countryside and charming villages. Of all the regions it is also the one place where a number of new courses are springing up with future developments expected in Sizandro Village, Vimeiro, Paimogo, Falsia del Rey and the Rainha Golf and Spa.

On the subject of green fees, the cost can vary widely across the country. Expect to pay a minimum of 50 Euro for a regular quality course in low season and around 80 to 90 Euro during the high season (July & August).

Generally, a round of golf can be booked online with many courses and there are now various service providers online offering this tee times booking service, sometimes at a discount to the ‘turn-up’ fee (cost if you just walked in for a round).
